Art Director 

Carnegie’s Art Director is an experienced creative problem solver with a passion for team mentorship, design, typography, imagery, and diverse visual communication principles for strategic storytelling. They must interpret data and strategy into visual outcomes and lead and motivate others to accomplish the same. They must have excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to communicate ideas to teams.

The Art Director will be responsible for creating and managing the overall design and visual style for numerous media formats. They will set the general artistic tone, using images and visuals to bring concepts to life. They are the visual problem solvers in partnership with the content strategists. They direct other designers to further develop the artwork and various layouts per project. The AD will assist the Creative Director and Associate Creative Director in managing the design team’s workload and assignments, review, and quality control their output, encourage and support the team.

General Responsibilities

  • Determines how to present concepts visually 
  • Produces art layouts by developing art concepts and providing work direction to staff
  • Meets art department and national design standards by following production, productivity, and quality standards
  • Resolves operational problems and identifies work process improvements and refinements
  • Actively trains, mentors, and manages junior and mid-level creatives
  • Generates clear ideas and concepts in tandem with the content strategist
  • Stays on top of all trends and maintain best practices
  • Takes work from concept to final execution within deadlines
  • Manage and delegate responsibilities to other designers and provide directions

Specific Tasks/Needs

  • Concepting, designing, presenting, and selling creative ideas in a variety of mediums
  • Reviews Creative Briefs, Client research, and checks/reviews Client assets for quality and usability
  • Works with Content Strategists and under Creative Directors to solve an array of visual and marketing problems
  • Daily review and reporting to Creative Director and Associate Creative Director of possible creative, workflow, scheduling, and staffing issues
  • Is mindful of how content looks, flows, and works within a piece
  • Has ownership and leadership for the design and direction for the actuate creation for client personality expressions
  • Fosters a collaborative, creative, and positive culture
  • Willingness to fully execute design ideas in a variety of mediums – no matter how large or small
  • Monitoring designers ASANA check-ins, updates, and delays
  • Assists the Creative Director with team building exercises and improving team performance
  • Leads and participates in brainstorming sessions
  • Art directs and manages external vendors, contractors, and freelancers for creative work and production


Carnegie Dartlet’s Art Director must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Marketing, or a related field, and have at least ten years of formal design and/or creative agency experience. Proven results managing complex communication or media projects with a strong portfolio of demonstrated successful case studies is required at application.

A portfolio of writing samples is required at application.
